Jamal Sterrett at on form
8th July 2022 - 10th July 2022
Jamal Sterrett, performance artist is coming to on form – You will find him around the garden from Friday 8th to Sunday 11th July.
‘I don’t understand how a sculpture works but I relate to the cause and craftsmanship of desiring to birth nothing into something.’
..
We are excited to welcome Jamal Sterrett to on form. Jamal visited us during installation and we were captivated by the way he responded to the sculpture, channelling its essence through movement.
Let him tell you what he does in his own words:
‘I feel relatable to sculptures in some sense as I often feel formless day to day, if I’m not moving. My senses overtake my perception of self and I merge with any natural sound and environment I’m in. Bruk up* dance enables me to bring form and stability to my mind and body. Like a sculpture, I carve out a personal nervous system for me to exist in, stabilising my heightened senses, directing its formless state into a physical response of the outside world manifested as dance.’
‘Having Asperger’s gives me heightened sensitivity to stimuli. I use these sensations as a guide for movement. The meditational aspect of Bruk up* turns my body into an open channel, revealing the synergy between the subconscious and conscious mind.’
*Bruk Up is an improvisational dance style bridging Jamaican dancehall and hip-hop. It was pioneered by George Adams (aka Bruk Up on account of his damaged leg) who migrated from Kingston, Jamaica to Brooklyn in the 1990s.
