Simon Hitchens graduated in Fine Art from Bristol Polytechnic in 1990, and has exhibited extensively since then. He frequently exhibits in solo and group exhibitions, undertaking private commissions and numerous large scale public commissions. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal British Society of Sculptors in 1998, is the winner of the 2003 Millfield School Sculpture Competition and was short listed for the Jerwood Sculpture Prize in 2004. He is the fourth generation of artist in his family.Ten years ago, whilst Simon had mastered many technical aspects of carving stone, he decided that he had nothing more to say by using stone as a medium to make sculpture, and exclusively worked with clear cast resin. He transformed his working practice in 2004, with a seminal work that took a rough piece of rock from the natural world and displayed it in an honest and inquiring fashion. To this day Simon continues this line of enquiry, presenting rock with its alter ego, as a metaphor for the human condition. He frequently juxtaposes rock with a variety of other media, cast resin, photography, reflection and painted illusions, as a way of asking questions about the natural world, and our position in it.
