I learned to appreciate stone while working as a master mason on a Gothic Cathedral two decades ago. As a 21st century sculptor, I use all the technology available to me, combined with traditional skills. Stone sculpture has more to offer than a beautiful surface; it is a material that connects us with earth itself. I want to convey our physical relationship with the ground, and create a balance between form and surface. After working at the Cathedral of Schwabisch Gmuend, German sculptor Ekkehard Altenburger began his academic studies in 1991, studying sculpture at Bremen’s Hochschule fuer Kuenste and Edinburgh College of Art, followed by an MA from Chelsea College of Art. He has exhibited extensively and has work in collections throughout Europe. Recent group exhibitions include SWITCH 2014 at the Hague, the Royal Academy’s 2011 and 2013 summer exhibitions, and Sculpture at Glyndebourne in 2011. He exhibited at on form 12.
